A long sandy beach with deep water within casting range make it the place to be if your looking for the larger fish. On its day Perch Rock can produce some real specimen sized fish.

Fort Perch Rock - New Brighton

Spring & Summer
Spring and summer will see thornbacks and smooth hounds as main target species. Some very good sized huss are also there for the angler using fish and squid baits.
In recent years a growing number of bass are appearing in catches but these are often a by-catch rather than the original target species.
Dogfish are always ready to attack almost any bait an angler puts in the water!

Autumn & Winter
Autumn and winter see whiting, dabs, codling, a few decent conger, and thornback rays well into December.

Guidance

Perch rock is best fished from 2.5 hours before low until around an hour after low. Spring tides are favoured as the deep water will be in casting range for even average casters. The mark can be fished on neap tides but a long cast is required to hit the deep channel.

Standard beach gear/rigs suitable for the baits are all that's needed, though a clipped down rig will help get that bit of extra distance and get you fishing into the channel earlier.
As a general rule of thumb squid and bluey warps or plain squid baits work well for the rays. The smooth hounds require peeler or soft back crabs to offer you the best chance. The hounds will take plain squid or raw prawn if you can't get crab.

In winter black lug and squid cocktails or a large black lug bait is the preferred cod bait. You'll find that rays will also take lug and squid so it's the best option. If your only after rays switch to squid and bluey or squid and mackerel wraps.

Getting there.

Head for New Brighton and park in the large car park next to the Fort and Lighthouse. It's about 7-10 minutes walking going around the left of the fort to reach the marks.
Travel light is the best advice.

Disabled Advice

Perch Rock is unsuitable for disabled anglers. It involves a lengthy walk over sand.
