Town Hall Steps
Last Update September 2022

A popular easy to access venue offering a good chance to catch a few winter codling. Low water fishing is off the beach and high water from the promenade. Access to the beach is via a slipway opposite Egremont Ferry Pub. This mark seems to fish better on the larger tides of over 9m.

Fishing low water from the beach.
As a general rule you can begin fishing about 3hrs before and 2hrs after LW, but this will vary a little depending upon the size of tide and the wind direction.
In the main the beach is flat and fairy featureless but the closer you go towards the Seacombe Ferry Terminal the tidal flow increases its deeper and lot snaggier. This ground is what attracts the codling. Be prepared to sacrifice some terminal tackle to increase your chance of better sized catch. As a general rule most codling will be between 2lb and 4lb with the very occasional larger fish. Most codling get caught when the tides running a bit. The slack periods over low water itself will produce more whiting, dabs and if fishing with fish baits there’s always the chance of dogfish.

Fishing high water from the prom.
If fishing this mark over HW you’ll generally fish the flood for 3hrs up to HW and 2hrs of the ebb. In the the warmer months you can expect school bass, dabs, plaice, flounder and smooth hounds. The smooth hounds will start to show here after the first fish come from the rock channel. July and August offer the best opportunities.

Winter will see whiting, dabs and a few small codling. When fishing from the prom it’s considered better to move down the prom closer to the around the Guinea Gap Leisure Centre found heading towards the Seacombe Ferry from Town Hall Steps.
Roadside parking is available in a number of the side streets leading down to or adjacent to the prom. There’s also a car park at the end of Tobin Street.
If you want to fish closer to Seacombe Ferry you can use the small cap park by Guinea Gap Leisure Centre on Riverview Road. Access here to the prom is via a step pathway so not suitable for Anglers who are disabled or wheelchair users

At the Egremont Pub end access is good and wheelchair access is excellent.
There is an ongoing debated about blue badge owners driving onto and along the prom as all vehicles are prohibited access. However many people do drive slowly and tuck their cars tight up to the wall. It’s up to whether you want to risk a fine or not.
