small weir 2
larger weir.
Parking for the top half of
the middle stretch is limited to 2 cars. To get to the parking leave
Criccieth at the cross roads just outside Companions taking the
Caernarfon road. After approx 2 miles you reach the bridge over the
river. Just over the river and about ¾ of the way up the hill there is
a small parking area just large enough for two cars. The path down to
the river is in between the parking area and the first row of cottages
on the left . Follow path downstream fishing the pools down towards the
footbridge at the top end of the middle stretch.
Dolbenmaen - Parking is difficult other than here on the old
bridge.
By
Foorbridge between Weirs - Parking here is in a road side lay by
capable
of holding a maximum of only 2 cars
For the lower section of the upper stretch is via Tyddyn Cethin Caravan
site. Please drive slowly as you enter the caravan site. The entrance is
a right hand turn of the Caernarfon Road about a ¼
mile before the bridge over the river. The turn takes you over a cattle
grid then into an open area , follow the road straight on passing the
cottage on the left and through a narrower gap in between two buildings.
On your left is an open barn, park here (in front of it), on the left in
a convenient place not blocking anyone in.
You will then have to
walk up through the caravan site to the far field where there is a gate.
Go through the gate and follow the river upstream. ( please do not make
any noise if you are walking through after dark as there will be
residents staying in their caravans). This section is also excellent
sport for you who like to go brown trout fishing during the day.
The bottom part of the
upper stretch is very boggy and extreme care is needed. In addition to
the soft going there is also a resident bull in this area.
The first pool, The House Pool, is
directly under the owners cottage so please be quite if you intend to
fish it. It is worth fishing using a fly at night.
Lions Rock Pool is next pool you'll come to
approx 200 yards after the gate. The name will be obvious when you get
there. A good fly-fishing pool but also good with a worm in spate
conditions.
An easy walk along the riverbank passing a number
of good fly water pools in the next ¼ mile. All these are worth fishing
a worm when the rivers high a coloured.
After passing a footbridge you’ll go through a
woody area which will probably be a bit boggy. Once you‘ve come out of
this on the other side just keep on walking for approx 100 yards and
eventually you’ll come to one of the most popular pools of the river.
. .
Widows Pool is a fantastic pool for the fly
and for the wormers during the day. From the neck of the pool to the
small falls of white water is where most of the fish lie during the day.
A good-sized pool for the wormer during the day and the fly fisher at
night. A good spot to be during the back end of the season during high
clear water with the fly or spinner for the salmon. One of the best
pools on the river, but rarely fished due to the long walk. It’s
definitely worth a go and it only takes about 15 mins to walk from the
car.
Allt Goch is just around the corner from the
Windows Pool. It is a deep pool in places and holds good sizeable
fish. Excellent for back end fishing for salmon which in the right
conditions will produce fish to worm ,spinner or fly. It can also be
fished from (right hand bank) left hand bank looking up stream.
From here onwards is tough going, boggy land takes
forces you away from the river. For you hardy fishermen amongst you who
dare to venture this far there are plenty of small pools, rocky
stretches and runs which all in the right conditions will produce fish.
You could consider the alternative. Walk back to
your car and drive back on to the main road ,turn right , go over the
bridge and follow the road for approx 2 miles driving through the
village of Rhoslan. Opposite a sharp left hand bend is a road branching
off to the right , take this road for approx 1 ½ miles until you drive
pass the local rubbish tip (on the right) and park up a couple of
hundred yards up the road on the right .
From here you can either cross the foot bridge and
go down river towards the Widows Pool or you can go over the stile
before the footbridge and walk up river (left hand bank as you face up
stream) and fish the pools here. Most of these pools are either fished
with worm during a spate or spinner at high, clear water.
If you drive on about another 500 yards there’s a
lay-by on your right with a stile going over the wall. This will take
you up river to the sewage works pool which can be fished during the day
with worm or by fly at night.
If you want information for marks further
upstream pop into Companions for more details.
