This is known as ‘The Woods Section’ it’s not
the ideal place for fly-fishing but having said that many anglers do fish the
fly.
A good section when
the river is in spate and especially popular with the locals who like to
fish the worm. There are some good pools throughout this section of the
river and fish hold in most of them. A very rocky and twisty section
considered by many the best stretch of the river.
PARKING: Just before the village bridge there is a
right turning that takes you past a row of terraced houses on your right
hand side.
After approximately 100yards the entrance of Lloyd George’s gravestone
is on your left, park anywhere along the side of the road making sure
not to block the entrance (many people visit this historic site). To
access the river n follow the path down via the grave’s entrance and
through the kissing gate at the bottom. From here follow the
public footpath up stream.

New Pools:- you’ll come to these after going through the first
gate 50 yards up river. Not the most popular of pools and tend not to be
fished on a regular basis. These pools where re-constructed a number of
years ago and locals seem to think they are not as productive as
previously. You also tend to get people with dogs disturbing the river
during the daytime. You can fly fish and worm these pools and at the
right time you can catch fish here. A couple of years ago we sent a
visiting angler to these pools. It was a hot sunny August day, within 2
hours he was back at the shop weighing a fresh run salmon of 7 lb 5 oz.

Pwll Deio:- This pool is best fished from the opposite bank
during a good spate with a big bunch of worms . A favorite worming pool,
(if I can get in before Emrys), you can fish from the path side and
it’s possible to fly-fish the pool.

23
Penmaen Mawr Pool :- after Pwll Deio pool comes Penmaen Mawr
pool just beyond a gate. This is another fine worming pool when
the river’s in a spate and is fished from the path side. Good fish are
taken from this pool in most spates, but watch out for the snags. The
pool is marked by a large rock at its top end (path side).

24
Noflyn Pool:- is a short walk up stream to get to the riverbank
you must leave the path and walk down to the river. A long pool best
fished with a fly in normal conditions but worth a go with a worm in
spate conditions.

25
Pwll Berw:- is a good holding pool which can produce good fish.
Not far up river from Noflyn having a waterfall at the head of the pool
marks it. A good worming pool day or night when the
river’s in spate. The occasional fish is taken on the fly. This pool
is a holding pool. The waterfall creates well-oxygenated water at the
head where fish lay up ready to leap to the next pool. A good choice for
the angler fishing worm.

26
Llyn Glas:- is a long run type of pool and can be very productive if
the sea trout are on the move. Better with the fly but another good
worming pool in spate. This is the pool just below the footbridge.

After this pool is a Foot Bridge ,this bridge is
used mainly when the river is in spate for the angler to return back
down river on the opposite bank. Waders are needed to walk down river
especially in spate conditions.

Fishing on the opposite bank is a must in a spate.
Carry on down fishing from pool to pool until eventually you will reach
the village bridge on the opposite end from where you started.

Continuing up stream.
27
Allt Y Wyddan:- is set back into the cliff on the far side of the
island . Here the river splits in two. A very difficult pool to access
as there is wading involved to get to the pool located under the cliff
face. Fishing is not allowed off the island so it means crossing
the river again over flat rock through the river to the other side. (if
you have walking difficulties, stay away from here) A great
holding pool for the bait fisherman but no good with a fly.

28
Llyn Meirch:- because of the popularity of the pool with
visitors it makes day time fishing no go. Local kids have a rope swing
from which they jump into the river during the warmer months, The pool
just seems to attract picnickers and swimmers. Worth a try for a short
period during the night on the fly after the pool has had a chance to
settle down. Worming during a spate is worth a go also.

From here it’s
not worth going any further as a few hundred yards up stream is private
fishing. ( from the steel gate onwards).
The opposite side
of the river is club water so you can either wade across to the right
hand bank (left hand side looking up river) or better still drive round
and park your car in the car park by the bridge on the Caenarfon road.
From here onwards are mainly rock pools and rough
water, most of these pools are fished during a spate with a worm. This
section is good when the river’s in spate. It’s best reached from
top car park rather than wade across the river.
29
Ladies Pool:- is a deep pool set in a kind of rocky gorge, it’s a
small pool but holds fish. It has to be said it is fairly snaggy.

30
The Angling Association do not have the fishing rights on
the left hand bank ( right hand if looking upstream) as far as the Rhyd Y Benllig Bridge.

31
Llyn Gro Man:- is a good worming pool, the shingle bank makes an
excellent spot for trotting a worm down stream. Productive during heavy
spate conditions.

32
Rock Pool:- The Rock Pool is a type of pool you can fish the worm
during the day and until dark in normal water level conditions. Fish lie
around the rock and in the small runs in the head and tail of the pool.
Fly works at night but you need to stand in the middle of the river to
fish.

The rest of the fishing up river to Rhyd Y Benllig Bridge no recognized pools although if you like the look of a spot
fish it.
