Hells Mouth, (Port Neigwl)
Streetmap Link
Description
A south western facing storm beach backed by step clay cliffs with a rocky headland at each end. During spring tides or when there's an onshore blow the tide will reach right to the foot of the cliffs at the top of the beach. Be aware of this and make sure your backing up towards an exit of the beach.
Apart from at each end where the ground is rough this is a clean sand surf beach facing south west. In strong west, south westerly winds the surf can be huge. Not really surprising when you consider its name, Hells Mouth.
Best Bait
Crab, sand eel and razor fish for bass. Mackerel and squid for whiting, dogfish and bull huss, lug and mackerel for dab, wrasse lug and turbot on sand eel. There is little chance of getting bait at the venue so bring your own.
Summer Species
Bass, turbot, mackerel, dogfish, bull huss, wrasse and occasional rays and tope.
Winter Species
Whiting, coalfish, school bass (sometimes beyond Christmas) and dabs.
Tackle & Tactics
Best times are 1½ hrs either side of low water period for bass, bull huss, turbot and ray then again from about 2 hrs to high water and 2 hrs of the ebb for bass, dogfish, whiting, mackerel and dabs.
Bass and turbot are best in spring and autumn along with rays dogfish are present virtually all year round. June and July give the best chance of a shore caught tope. Late spring right through to late autumn or early winter at night gives the best chance of huss. Autumn and winter will produce whiting, coalfish, dogfish, dabs and occasional school bass.
Standard beach gear using 150g - 170g leads both plain and grip's with 2 hook rigs for the smaller species or single hook clipped down rigs for larger baits fished at range.
Best tides are spring tides.
