Cod Corner and Monksferry
Last Update October 2022

Cod corner at the righthand corner of the Land Registery Building right at the point where the 'finger post' is situated is a renowned hot spot for winter cod. It's name is can be misleading and there's more than cod to be caught there.
Monks Ferry is the area of prom to the right of cod corner. It's more sheltered from the full force of the flooding tide due to the shelted position away from the main flow. Monks Ferry is relatively shallow.

Cod Corner viewed from the quayside at Monks Ferry. Note the rods set up right alongside the finger post.
Be warned it's very snaggy. Notice also how the angler is walking back with his rod trying to free himself from a snag!

Summer Species
The main summer species are smooth hounds, thornback rays and conger eel from Cod Corner and smaller species, flatfish and whiting from Monk's Ferry.

Winter Species
The main species in winter are; whiting, codling, dogfish, dabs from Cod Corner with whiting, small codling and rockling from Monks Ferry.

Guidance Cod Corner
Right at the point where the finger post is doesn't offer very much room for more than 2 or 3 anglers. For that reason have a plan B as the chances of anglers already fishing is very likely. If you find yourself needing an alternative mark close by move the shot distance to the and fish the bottom end of Town Hall Steps prom around Guinea Gap see
Town Hall Steps page here. The ground there, close to Seacombe Ferry is similar to cod corner and it produces just as many fish.
If you are lucky and the mark by the finger post is free you'll find yourself fishing onto some pretty rough and snaggy ground. Facebook reports abound with comments about how much gear anglers have lost in a single session. It's the nature of the ground with the snags and mussel beds which attracts the cod! The use of a rotten bottom is advisable.
As with any of the Mersey marks where rough ground comes into play it's important to use sufficient weight to ensure the lead isn't being moved by the tide. My advice use a minimum of 210g gripper leads maybe slightly less if you only fishing the slacker period towards high water. I'd still use a minimum of 190g for those periods.
Baits for the cod peeler crab ( especially over the period from October to Christmas is a top choice as is are large offerings of several black lug worms or worm and squid cocktails.
For the rays during the warmer months bluey and squid wraps are catching the most fish. Over the few months (June to August) when Smooth Hounds are in the river use peeler crab or squid.
If you fish close to the ferry be warned the embarkation landing stage is anchored to the river bed which very hefty chains which will account for all your leads and rigs if you cast over them! I found this out to my cost he first time I fished the mark . . . I lost 6 sets of gear before the penny dropped!

Guidance Monks Ferry
The area of river between cod corner and the Monks Ferry Slipway is sheltered by Cod Corner and offers a calmer area to fish on the flood tide. It doesn't have the same depth within casting range as cod corner but it will still produce plenty of whiting and smaller codling with the occasional larger fish.

Monks Ferry Prom - Comfortable and sheltered from the main flow during the flood tide.
